Zofran Birth Defects Lawsuits: What You Need To Know
The drug Zofran, also known as Ondansetron, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat cancer patients with nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy as well as treat post-operative patients on pain medications. However, soon GlaxoSmithKline, a major drug company, realized that they could also promote Zofran off-label to OBGYN’s to help pregnant women’s morning sickness. The FDA never approved the drug to be used for morning sickness. Zofran was never tested for safety in pregnancy. Although the drug did help settle symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, it unfortunately can be dangerous to the fetus and can cause serious birth defects.
Even with all the scientific research indicating that Zofran can cause various birth defects, doctors continue to prescribe the drug to pregnant women. In many cases, these women start taking the drug in their first trimester which is the most crucial part of the fetus’ growth and development. So why has the FDA not taken the drug off the market? This is because the drug is meant for cancer patients and unfortunately they can’t stop the doctors from prescribing it how they wish. It is legally required for the doctor to explain ALL potential risks and side effects that may come from taking Zofran. However the drug company (Glaxo) has been misleading on the risks to the developing fetus and presented the drug as a safe option for pregnant woman.
What are the Possible Side Effects/Birth Defects?
Early scientific research on Zofran determined that it does pass through the placenta to the developing fetus. It can have an effect on the baby that could cause birth defects like the following:
- Heart Defects
- Holes in the heart
- Heart Murmurs
- Facial Deformities
- Cleft Palate
- Cleft Lip
- Midline deformities
- Musculoskeletal anomalies
